Some of the Aesthetic Awards for this year.
WBC Aesthetic Rules 2018
These rules are to be incorporated into the WBC Official Rule book and used for judging the Aesthetics Competition at the WBC World Cup.
The WBC Organizer will appoint an Aesthetics Coordinator(s) to discharge all aspects of the Aesthetics Competition. The Aesthetics Coordinator(s) will appoint a Judging Panel. Said Panel may be selected in advance or at the competition. The Aesthetics Competition is only open to WBC Registered Attendees with the exception that attendees may bring entries from another craftsperson as long as the person making the object is a member of one of the IFBA countries or has received permission in advance from the WBC Organizer and as long as said attendee is in charge of the entry (that is bring the entry to the WBC, take the entry home or put the entry in the Auction and be in charge of any related money). Entries must be submitted in person, by the craftsperson or representative, to event organizers beginning Friday July 20 (at the Registration desk), continuing through the 21st and 22nd and no later than noon, Monday July 23rd. Judging will occur Monday the 23rd with awards and Best of Show given the evening of Tuesday the 24th. NEW THIS YEAR: a photo and brief description of all entries must be submitted in advance of the competition, any time from publication of these rules until July 1st, 2018. Send photo and description via email to [email protected] with the subject "Aesthetic Entry". All images and descriptions will be kept strictly confidential with the Aesthetic Committee and judges until after the competition. For questions, please email David Hirsch at [email protected] or Alejo Palacio at [email protected] or Eckhard Mawick at [email protected]
Judging Panel must consist of three judges who are active throwers, craftspeople or both. Ideally the judges will be from three different countries that are represented at the WBC. Judges shall not have entries in the Competition. Judging for the five basic categories will be done the day before the awards ceremony.
In the event a group (such as students) wish to enter a collaborative object, one person must be a Registered WBC attendee or the object must be submitted as noted above. If a person enters a series or a puzzle made of several boomerangs or parts, then the whole series, puzzle or spatial composition will be accepted and judged as one entry. Only one of the two entries per person per category can be a series.
The five main categories for Awards will consist of Decoration, Craftsmanship and Natural Elbow for boomerangs. A separate category will be judged for both throw sticks and boomerang related objects, such as bull roarers, t-shirts, etc. Each category will have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place. A sixth category, Best of Show, will be selected from the objects in the first five categories. Three objects from the five main categories will be selected by the judges for Best of Show. The order of winners for Best of Show, 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be decided by show of hands by those in attendance at the awards ceremony.
All objects entered in the competition must have clear designation (whether inscribed on the object or affixed to it) of name of maker, name of object and country. A category for the entry may be suggested by the entrant. However, separation of Aesthetic entries into categories may be selected or changed by the judges or the Aesthetics Coordinator, and any change of this sort may not be disputed. Any boomerang entered into the competition is attested to be a flying returning boomerang. If the judges feel there is credible evidence that an entry designated a boomerang is in fact not capable of returning, then the judges can ask permission to test said boomerang or, at their discretion biding the inability to test or a wish not to as for potential of causing harm to entry, the judges may place said object in the Boomerang Related Object category.
Definitions for the categories are as follows:
1. Boomerangs: Any style past or present that when thrown precesses and returns to thrower.
A. Decoration: paint, appliqué or attached materials applied to the boomerang.
B. Craftsmanship: Strip lamination, lap joint or other construction processes that emphasize technique and manufacturing prowess of materials, wood or otherwise.
C. Natural Elbow: Boomerangs constructed from roots or limbs of trees or other organic structures where the curve of the boomerang is already in existence.
2. Throw sticks (Kylies): Any object constructed from natural or man made substances that is designed for non-returning flight.
3. Boomerang Related Objects (Bull Roarers, t-shirts, etc.): Any object d'Art that incorporates boomerangs or is related to boomerangs by culture or that has a boomerang theme.
A new trial category of Team T-Shirt will be debuted this year. It will be judged separately from the other categories.
There is a limit of two entries per category or five entries total from any individual as long as the entry has not previously been entered into a WBC Aesthetics competition. Objects entered into the competition are understood to be the property and work of the person entering them. If a person enters someone else's work, whether on another person's behalf or as owner of said object, the judges may require documentation that the person entering the object has permission of the originator to do so and any award will be given to the person who performed the work, although it may be received by the person submitting the work. Any collaborative object that wins or places will be noted as a win or place for the group responsible for the work, not just the individual who entered the object. Any entry that wins or places (1st - 3rd in any category) is ineligible to be entered into any future WBC Aesthetics competition. However, objects that do not win or place may be re-entered at a following WBC. Objects that are re-entered may only be entered two at a time at any given WBC.
It is the responsibility of the person entering this contest to read and understand the Rules. Judges decisions are final.
The Aesthetics Coordinator(s) will see that individual photos are taken of all entries to assist in public relations and notification of winners.
